Hinesville announced Friday that its sewage plant on Fort Stewart released 5.47 million gallons of partially treated wastewater into Taylors Creek after an equipment failure.

The release said, “Operations staff discovered the wastewater release and acted quickly to resolve the malfunction. The plant is now back in compliance and awaiting parts to complete the repairs.”

The press release also said: “Contingency-response procedures were followed and the appropriate regulatory agencies were notified. We do not anticipate any adverse public-health impacts as a result of this incident.”
State law requires a sewage plant’s operator to notify the public when there is a spill.

The city operates the plant on post under an agreement with the Army. The plant services both civilian and military users.
