A 17-year-old Long County teen was killed in a single vehicle accident Monday afternoon.

According to Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles, the teen, Daniel Luna, was killed when his vehicle left the road on Highway 301 six miles outside Ludowici, where it struck a tree and burst into flames.

Nobles said the accident occurred around 4:15 pm.  Luna was pronounced dead at the scene and the accident is currently under investigation by the Long County Sheriff’s Office.

Luna was a student at Long County High School, and Assistant Principal Michael Taylor said the school is offering grief counseling to students.

Long County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters said Luna was a good student who worked for the school system.

“We’re all deeply shocked and saddened by this young man’s passing,”  Waters said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in their time of grief.”
