The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled an open house for Wednesday to discuss the agency’s assessment of the Hatch nuclear plant’s two units in 2015.

The plant, operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co., is near Baxley, about 55 miles west of Hinesville.

The open house is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. in Southeastern Technical College Auditorium, 3001 E. First St., Vidalia.

NRC resident inspectors and other staff will be available to answer questions about the safety performance and regulatory oversight of the Hatch plant, as well as highlights of NRC inspections.

"We invite the public to visit with us and find out what we’re doing to ensure Hatch and other nuclear plants are operated safely," said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney. "These annual meetings offer an opportunity for everyone, and especially people who live near the plant, to learn about our inspection and oversight programs."

The NRC’s annual assessment letter to plant officials addressing the 2015 Hatch plant performance will serve as the focus of the open house, but NRC staff members will answer other questions about the NRC’s role.

The NRC review of the Hatch plant for 2015 concluded that it operated in a manner that preserved the public health and safety and protected the environment.
