New ground was broken earlier today to start construction on Riceboro City Park, located behind the Riceboro Youth Center. City and county officials gathered at the site to show support and talk about the progress of Riceboro. The main feature of the park will be a quarter mile walking trail, which will be handicap accessible. Paul Simonton, of engineering consulting firm P.C. Simonton & Association, Inc., said that he hopes to connect the park’s walking trail to the coastal bikeway trail that runs along Highway 17, so bicyclists can use the park as a pulloff or rest station. The park will also have a pavilion, playground, solar lighting and open areas. Simonton said that the park will grow as the city grows.
