Make a difference with Rivers Alive!
Karen Bell
Keep Liberty Beautiful Executive Director Karen Bell.

The primary day for our local Rivers Alive cleanup in Liberty County is Saturday, October 24, 2020!  Rivers Alive is a statewide effort to preserve and protect our waterways in Georgia. This effort each year is also part of the international efforts of The Ocean Conservancy.  In Liberty County, we also hold our primary cleanup day on the national Make a Difference Day. We are a registered activity for this major volunteer drive around our country. National Make A Difference Day brings community service to a whole new level each year. Organizations join forces on the fourth Saturday in October to make a difference, big or small.  Millions of people have united in the shared mission to improve the lives of others.  Make a Difference Day is over 20 years strong and is the nation’s largest day of community service.

Make a Difference Day is a USA TODAY initiative, backed by the Gannett Company, Points of Light Foundation, and Newman’s Own. It is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. The projects around the country for Make a Difference Day show that anyone, regardless of age, location, or resources, can accomplish amazing things when they take on the problems they see in their community.  What the world really needs is more of us caring and reaching out to make a difference for others and our Earth, without being told or taxed to do so.  Let’s protect our waterways because it provides so much for us.

Volunteering for the Rivers Alive cleanup this month is one way to make a powerful statement about protecting our waterways. Making good choices every day about how we handle litter is another vital way to prevent water pollution.  Join us as we stop waste in its tracks.  By stopping litter at the source and where it is tossed or blown out of cars or boats or blown out of trash cans, we can prevent that litter from ultimately joining our waterways.  Our daily choices make a difference in how much litter ends up on sidewalks and roads and down storm drains or in creeks and rivers and, ultimately, the ocean.  In just a few hours of your time, you can help prevent tons of litter and debris from ever reaching the ocean.

We will have official Rivers Alive neck gaiters this year for at least the first 500 volunteers that registered, so contact us now! We also provide all the cleanup supplies for our hardworking volunteers.  SNF Chemtall, our sponsor locally, provides the water, needed personal protective equipment, and snacks for volunteers, which is a change from our regular appreciation cookout due to COVID-19.  So, plan to make a difference and contact us at Keep Liberty Beautiful. You can call (912) 880-4888 or email klcb@libertycountyga.com by Wednesday, October 21.  If October 24, 2020, does not work for you and your group, we can schedule a cleanup date and location that does.  We invite you to join us in service on October 24, 2020, for Make a Difference Day 2020 at our Rivers Alive cleanup.

Also, round up your tires and encourage your neighbors to do so as well, to help our community.  KLB and Liberty County Solid Waste Department is sponsoring a Tire Amnesty Day on October 24, 2020.  Visit our KLB website for more information, www.keeplibertybeautiful.org.
