A man accused of intentionally setting his mother's house on fire was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation before any reasonable bond would be considered in the case.
According to public documents filed at the Clerk of County Courts office, Liberty County Superior Court Judge Robert Russell ordered a mental evaluation for defendant Harry Bacon during a bond hearing June 2. Bacon's public defender, Snehal Patel, filed the motion for the hearing May 23.
Bacon was arrested and charged with one count of felony arson in the first degree (endanger), one count of felony Burg Res, and one count of terroristic threat for his alleged involvement in the burning of Elnora Bacon's house at 4888 West Oglethorpe Highway on May 12.
The reported threat charge stemmed from an incident on the same day of the fire, where Bacon allegedly told everyone he was going to cut off their arms and legs, kill them and set the house on fire.
His initial bond at the time of his arrest was denied.
According to public files, this is not Bacon's first run-in with the law.
Two months prior to the alleged arson, Bacon reportedly posted bond in the sum of $7,900 from charges of simple battery/harm (misdemeanor) and terroristic threat against Donnetta Stevens.
She alleges that on March 22 Bacon grabbed her shirt and scratched her neck while threatening to kill her. According to the charge report, he returned later that same day to her Bill Carter Road residence with a knife.
Bacon reportedly posted the bond that afternoon and was released.
While incarcerated at Liberty County jail on the most recent charges, an additional charge of obstruction of a law enforcement officer was added, stating Bacon allegedly beat a correction officer May 16. Bond for the obstruction charge was set at $3,000.
