FORT BENNING - Col. Johnnie Johnson is taking command of Fort Benning's 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team.

The 3,700 soldiers in the combat team are part of the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Johnson is scheduled to take command on Wednesday of the team that's been led by Col. Peter Jones.

The 48-year-old Jones and the brigade returned in October after a 12-month deployment to Iraq. He's been at Fort Benning for 2½ years. He says the brigade is not on the schedule for redeployment.

The 47-year-old Johnson, a native of Tampa, Fla, has been at Fort Benning since July.
