With the patchwork complete, robes specially designed for wounded 3rd Infantry Division soldiers were ready for transport last week.
The Coastal Empire Chapter of the Association of the United States Army recently partnered with Coastal Signs/Fabri-Care Cleaners owner John Tzen to have 3rd ID patches sewn on 240 robes donated to the group by Executive Director of the National Association of the 10th Mt. Div. Inc., Michael Plummer.
Tzen’s employees stitched the emblems onto the robes free of charge to add a sense of home for soldiers as they recuperate from combat injuries at hospitals and medical centers around the world, Coastal Empire AUSA president Lou Carreras said.
Because many soldiers arrive at medical centers directly from the combat zone and without extra clothing, the robes will ensure that they have something comfortable to wear waiting on them, he said.
Command Sgt. Maj. McArthur Dixon, 3rd Infantry Division Rear Detachment command sergeant major, and Sgt. Richard Fields picked up the first batch of garments Friday morning.
Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, 3rd ID commanding general, was to personally deliver the robes to some of the division’s wounded soldiers over the weekend during visits to Brooke Army Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center.
Robes will be shipped to soldiers, hospitals and medical centers as needed.
