Fort Stewart’s Warriors Walk is a treasure trove of mementos for fallen 3rd Infantry Division soldiers: pictures with family members, sports teams’ memorabilia, plaques, toy motorcycles and even the occasional bottle of a soldier’s favorite beer.
Those close to the soldiers normally place these items around the base of the eastern redbud trees lining the memorial, but a new initiative is aimed at getting the entire community involved in leaving a token of appreciation at each soldier’s dedicated site.
In conjunction with Wreaths Across America, organizers for the Wreaths for Warriors Walk project are planning “to place a wreath at the tree of each fallen soldier at Warriors Walk during the holidays,” according to project chairman, Bruce G. Muncher.
To achieve this goal, planners are seeking “sponsorships” from local residents to cover the costs of purchasing the wreaths, which based on the current number of soldiers honored on Warriors Walk, would total 369.
Residents can sponsor a wreath by going to the WAA Web site, www.wreathsacrossamerica.org, and clicking on the “Sponsor a Wreath” link on the left side of the page.
They cost $15 each and sponsors can choose to buy more than one. To ensure the wreaths are used for the local initiative, citizens must type-in “Wreaths for Warriors Walk” on line two of the address information section on the sponsor form.
Sponsors leery of paying online can also mail a check made out to Wreaths for Warriors Walk to project co-chairman Anthony Justi at: Wreaths Across America to Wreaths for Warriors Walk, c/o Anthony Justi, P.O. Box 3533 Fort Stewart, GA 31315. Checks will be consolidated and forwarded to WAA.
The wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled to take place on Warriors Walk on Dec. 15 at noon.
