Fort Stewart offers free tax help to soldiers

An experienced staff is ready to prepare and file soldiers’ tax returns at no charge at the Marne Tax Center.
Tax returns are filed electronically and if a refund is due, the soldier client will usually receive it within 10 business days.
Active-duty soldiers and family members are eligible. The tax preparation service is limited to simple returns only. Retirees and their eligible family members may be included at a later time, staffing permitting.
The Marne Tax Center will open Feb. 16. Hours of operation are Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon, for drop off only. Thursday through Friday service is by appointment only or to pick up completed returns. The center will be closed from noon-1 p.m. for lunch.
The tax center on Fort Stewart is at 1112 Worchester Ave., building 9404.
Documents clients should bring include: W2 for all wages received, state income tax return (prior year), military ID, receipts for charitable contributions, Social Security card or memo from Social Security Administration for member, spouse, dependents, property tax receipts, home mortgage interest statement, power of attorney (if necessary), student loan interest statement, prior year tax return, divorce decree if applicable, proof of dependent care expenses, proof of educational expenses, interest income statement (1099INT), HUD 1 statement (if home purchased in 2009), proof of purchase for new car purchased in 2009, dividend income statement (1099DIV), IRA/TSP contribution statements, educator expenses, statements reflecting capital gains/loss, account and routing number for direct deposit/debit (cancelled check) and stimulus payment statement.     
For those taxpayers filing tax returns in states other than Georgia, please have the city, county, township and school district available for the state of domicile and/or state of employment.
