Thousands of Americans have already taken part in the America Supports You “Giving Thanks” text messaging program, but there is still time to send texts of appreciation to U.S. troops serving overseas this Thanksgiving.
By texting a brief message to the number 89279, the ASY initiative allows people to send messages to soldiers overseas this holiday season and in return, gives soldiers the chance to respond with messages of their own.
Major mobile wireless providers, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile, will provide access to the “Giving Thanks” text messaging program, but message senders will incur standard text message fees based on their provider.
Servicemembers, however, will be able to view messages free by visiting a special Web page.
More than 48,000 messages have already been received between soldiers and citizens since the start of the program on Nov. 17, but texters have until midnight on Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day, to try to crack the 50,000 message mark.
