Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield gate policies, which loosened in May, are now restricting access to Department of Defense identification cardholders only at certain times during weekends.
The Fort Stewart main post is closed to anyone without a DoD ID from 11 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday. The change to access will continue indefinitely every Saturday night.
DoD ID cardholders may escort one guest, who has proper ID and is not on the installation bar roster, onto post.
Except for the restricted weekend hours, the military has a policy in which drivers of vehicles without official DoD decals can pull up to any gate, show valid photo ID and be allowed to drive on post, unless their name is on the list of persons barred from Fort Stewart.
Vehicles without decals should use the right lane entering the main gate.
Photo ID are also be required of all passengers, 16 years old and older.
That procedure is a streamlining of the method in which undecaled vehicles parked outside the Main Gate and the drivers went to the nearby Vehicle Registration Building where they showed their drivers license, proof of insurance and state vehicle registration form to obtain one of the blue paper passes, usually good for only one day. Although Fort Stewart may no longer check them, these three documents are still required to operate a vehicle in Georgia.
