Parks offer ways to deck the halls

Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites offer plenty of opportunities for festive family fun this holiday season. Celebrate by attending one of these events:
• 29th Annual Christmas on the Old Plantation
When: Friday-Saturday, Dec. 3-4, 6-9 p.m.
Where: Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site in Brunswick
What: This experience will demonstrate how Christmas was celebrated on a Southern rice plantation during the 1850s. Take a candlelit stroll down the old carriage road and enjoy candlelit tours of antebellum plantation house, hot wassail and cookies, Civil War re-enactors, Christmas carols and an appearance by Santa Claus.
Cost: $3-$6.

• A Colonial Christmas at Fort King George
When: Saturday, Dec. 11, 7-8:30 p.m.
Where: Fort King George Historic Site in Darien
What: Join the garrison for a traditional dinner in the enlisted barracks and an evening of colonial-style yule tide jollification. RSVP by Dec. 8.
Cost: $30.

• Winter Muster & Battle at Fort McAllister
When: Saturday, Dec. 11, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: Fort McAllister Historic Park in Richmond Hill
What: Enjoy a day of fort activities leading up the 15-minute battle that captured Fort McAllister. Witness the battle that ended Sherman’s March to the Sea.

• A Colonial Christmas
When: Saturday, Dec. 11, 5-8 p.m.
Where: Fort Morris Historic Site in Midway
What: Get away from the commercialization of the holidays and visit the site for a more peaceful celebration. Join park staffers for colonial refreshments, a yule log, bonfire, 18th century music, caroling, dancing and firing of the Christmas guns.

• Colonial Christmas at Wormsloe
When: Sunday, Dec. 12, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Wormsloe Historic Site in Savannah
What: Join us for a Christmas celebration 18th century style with caroling and dancing, the burning of the yule log, holiday observances of the Colonial period, games and refreshments.
Cost: $3.50-$5

• Fourth annual Luminary Fun Night with Santa
When: Saturday, Dec. 18, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah
Where: Bring your kids and pets for pictures with Santa then walk our enchanted luminary trail, do holiday arts and crafts and enjoy caroling on hayrides. There will be holiday treats and hot chocolate.
Cost: $5 parking

• Archery Day
When: Saturday, Dec. 18, 2-5 p.m.
Where: Stephen C. Foster State Park/Suwannee River Eco-Lodge at 400 Eco-Lodge Drive in Fargo
What: This event will teach children ages 6-16 the safe and proper way to use archery equipment. All participants will get a chance to target practice.
Cost: $15 plus $5 parking
