vote

Early voting in the general primary runoff will conclude Friday, and polls at precincts will open Tuesday at 7 a.m.

Liberty County voters in county commission District 1 will choose between incumbent Marion Stevens Sr. and challenger Larry Baker, the former Walthourville mayor, in a Democrat runoff. The winner will face Republican nominee Joseph “Michael” Cook for the seat in November.

Baker was the leading vote-getter in the primary, with 40.5% of the votes, or 726. Stevens was second at 38.1% and former Midway City Council member Stanley Brown was third with 21.4%. Since no candidate got the required 50% plus one votes to win outright, the race is going to a runoff.

That runoff is the only one with local candidates. There are several other runoffs for statewide and federal offices Liberty County voters can consider.

Voters in the Democrat primary runoff also will have choices for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, insurance commissioner and labor commissioner on the ballot. They also will choose who will oppose Jim Kingston in the fall for the U.S. House 1st District seat between Amanda Hollowell and Joyce Marie Griggs.

In the runoff for lieutenant governor on the Democrat ticket are former state Sens. Josh Mc-Laurin and Nabilah Parkes. Running for secretary of state are Dana Barrett and Penny Brown Reynolds, DeAndre Mathis and Keisha Sean Waites are in a runoff to be the insurance commissioner nominee and the labor commissioner runoff will be between Nikki Porcher and Michelle Michi Sanchez.

Republicans voting in the runoff will have to choose a nominee for governor, between current Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and businessman Rick Jackson. They also will choose a nominee for U.S. Senate between U.S. Rep. Mike Collins and former college football coach Derek Dooley.

Keisha Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor, won the Democrat nomination for governor and U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff had no primary opposition.

Republicans will choose between state Sens. Greg Dolezal and John F. Kennedy for a lieutenant governor nominee, and between Tim Fleming and Vernon Jones for a secretary of state nominee. Current state School Superintendent Richard Woods faces a runoff against Fred “Bubba” Longgrear. along with a nominee for the U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and state superintendent of schools. Republicans also will choose a nominee for the Public Service Commission-District 5.

Early voting is held at the elections main office in the Historic Liberty County Courthouse, 100 North Main Street in Hinesville, and at the Liberty County Community Complex in Midway.

Voters who requested a Republican ballot in the primary may receive a Republican ballot only for the runoff. Voters who request a Democrat ballot in the primary may receive a Democrat ballot only for the runoff. Voters who opted for a strictly non-partisan ballot in the primary may request either a Democrat or Republican ballot in the runoff.

Those voters who did not vote in the primary may take part in the runoff and can request either a Democrat or Republican ballot.

Through Tuesday, there had been 710 ballots cast in early voting, with another 72 by either mail or drop-off box.
