Liberty County property owners raced against the clock Tuesday to pay their property taxes before the deadline expired and avoid incurring late penalties. Liberty County Tax Commissioner Virgil Jones said the lines were long and collections had been good. Late penalties will be implemented starting today with a 1 percent increase for the first three months. After three months, a 10 percent increase will be implemented. For every month afterward, taxpayers will incur a one percent increase per month until property taxes are paid, Jones said.
