A five-vehicle crash on Oglethorpe Highway in Flemington late Wednesday afternoon caused a major traffic jam at the height of rush hour.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper William Bowman said all the vehicles involved were heading east around 5 p.m. when the driver of a 2013 Lexus swerved and slammed on her brakes.
A chain reaction ensued when the vehicles traveling behind the Lexus — a 2009 Nissan Frontier, a 2008 Ford F-150, a 2007 Chevy Tahoe and a 1997 Ford Expedition — slammed into one another, resulting in a large pileup.
The driver of the Tahoe tried to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of it, and the SUV ended up facing the opposite direction when it was struck by the vehicle behind it.
Liberty Regional EMS Director Robyn Todd said eight people were treated at the scene and released, and one victim was transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville.
The accident snarled traffic in both direction until law-enforcement officers opened up one lane on each side of the road.
