Hinesville Police Department is asking for the public's help finding an armed-robbery suspect.

Police were dispatched Sunday to GeoVista Credit Union on West Oglethorpe Highway regarding a reported armed robbery in progress at an ATM machine. While police were en route, dispatch advised that the suspect left on foot and was headed down Link Street toward Briar Circle.

Police made contact with the victim at the scene. He told police that he was at the Geovista Credit Union ATM when a white man carrying a small black gym bag and wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, black pants and silver-framed glasses approached him and demanded money. According to victim, the suspect also carried a hand gun, possibly a 9mm, in his right hand. Police say the suspect had short brown curly hair and may be bald in the front.

The victim said he told the suspect he had maxed out his card and only could withdraw $100. He withdrew the money and turned around to give it to the suspect, who told the victim to put the money on the ground.

The victim said he returned to his vehicle and the suspect grabbed the money and ran across West Oglethorpe Highway and onto Link Street. The victim said he followed the suspect in his vehicle and saw him running down Briar Circle but lost sight of him.

Police also spoke with the victim’s wife, who said she saw the suspect talking to her husband. When she saw the hand gun in the suspect’s hand, she said she immediately dialed 911 and stayed on the phone with dispatch until police arrived.

Both of the victim’s children, who also were present, told authorities that they saw the suspect point a gun at their father, take his money and run away. One of the victim’s sons said he thought the suspect ran toward Link Terrace Apartments. The other son said he saw the suspect run across West Oglethorpe Highway.

Authorities searched the area on foot and in patrol vehicles but were unable to find the suspect.

Anyone with information should call the Hinesville Police Department at 368-8211.
