Fort Stewart will be burning nearly 1,200 acres of underbrush in forests on the post today, according to a release from its public affairs office.

Flames in some of the controlled burns will be visible from highways on post. They are:

• 30 acres started by hand nine miles northeast of cantonment area and six mile north east of Lawson fire tower. Flames will be visible from Highway 144.

• 282 acres started by hand 11 miles northwest of cantonment and 10 miles northwest of Lawson fire tower. Flames will be visible from the Highway 144.

• 400 acres started from a helicopter 14 miles northwest of cantonment and 13 miles northwest of Lawson fire tower. Flames will be visible from the Highway 144.

• 480 acres started from a helicopter 11 miles northwest of cantonment and 11.5 miles west of Lawson fire tower. Flames will not be visible from any highways.

Winds are predicted to be out of the south at 10-14 mph, so should not blow smoke over the cantonment area or any Liberty County communities. Pembroke could see smoke.
