A fire destroyed a doublewide mobile home in Gum Branch early Wednesday, leaving a family of six homeless.

According to Gum Branch Fire Chief Thomas Fisher, the fire began sometime about 4 a.m.  Gregory and Sheila Wells and their children, who are 3, 5, 8 and 13 years old, escaped without injury.

Flames could still be seen shooting from the home an hour after the fire was reported, prompting the Gum Branch Fire Department to ask for mutual aid from Hinesville, Walthourville and Long County departments.

Liberty County Fire Coordinator James Ashdown said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
