West Court Street in downtown Hinesville was closed in both directions after construction crews taking down a house on the street this morning hit a gas line.
The street was reopened by late morning and more information was expected soon.
Liberty County Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director Larry Logan said that at 8:15 a.m., the fire department was en route and would try as quickly as possible to locate the source of the leak. “The only thing they’re doing now is trying to find out where the leak is coming from,” he said.
At one point, Logan said it was possible the area would be evacuated, if Atlanta Gas Light Co. workers were unable to find the problem quickly. No evacuation was ordered, however.
