A 29-year-old man may have drowned Thursday afternoon in a pond off Wells Cemetery Road near Gum Branch. At press time, Liberty County first responders were searching the pond for the man’s body, and a diving team was en route from Jesup. According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Barnes, the man reportedly had been swimming with a friend around 4 p.m. when he went under the water and did not resurface. The friend then went to get help. Liberty EMA, the sheriff’s office and area fire departments were assisting at the scene.
