LUDOWICI — A man employed at an antique store here was assaulted and then the store was robbed Friday.
According to Ludowici Police Department Officer J.D. Campbell, just a little before 10:30 a.m. Friday Gereld Kook was preparing the cash register for his oncoming shift. Kook went to the rear of Granny’s Antiques and Collectibles store to put some aluminum cans in a container.
When the clerk opened the rear door he allegedly was struck in the head by a man with some object.
Campbell said Kook fell to the ground bleeding from his head. The assailant went into the store, stepping over Kook, and proceeded to the cash register, stealing approximately $200.
Officer Sal Genualdi said that as the assault was taking place, a woman was in a game room section of the store. When Kook came to he yelled for help and the woman ran to a residence across the street.
She asked two men to call 911 because someone in the store needed help. Ludowici/Long County Dispatch received the call at 10:30 a.m.
At around 10:31, Genualdi, Campbell, Officer Louis Perez and Chief Richard Robertson all arrived at the store.
Campbell entered the front, while Perez and Genualdi secured the area and began searching for any suspicious people.
Robertson said that as he arrived, he saw three women walking toward the store. One appeared to be upset and it turned out she was the witness who had been in the store. Robertson said he told her to go to a police car, that an officer would come to her, to gather her information.
But, Genualdi said, she left the area. She called the store in a few minutes, however, to check on the condition of Kook, who told her the police needed to talk to her about what had happened. Genualdi then met with the woman to take her statement.
According to Campbell, Kook described the suspect as a black man, approximately six foot tall and wearing some type of black or navy blue hood.
Long County EMS was called, and Kook was treated for his injuries, but did not want to go to a hospital.
If caught the suspect could face charges of aggravated assault and robbery, both felonies.
There have been no arrests and the investigation is continuing. If anyone saw anyone in the area fitting the description of the suspect, or if they know anything about the case, they are asked to call Genualdi at 545-9472.
