A man accused of a sexual assault Thursday afternoon turned himself in Friday morning, according to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Det. Chris Reed.
A press release from the sheriff’s office said Roderick Dewayne Carter of Hinesville, who was on parole and is a registered sex offender, allegedly assaulted a woman walking in the Carter Road area of Walthourville about 3 p.m.
Liberty County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Walthourville Police were called to the scene and soon thereafter issued the release, saying they were looking for Carter, who they considered armed and dangerous.
Investigators did not say what led them to Carter, but did allege he attacked the woman as she was walking to her grandmother’s home. They said he used a weapon during the attack.
Carter was wanted for aggravated assault, kidnapping and attempted rape, according to the release. The exact charges to be filed were not reported Friday morning.
According to the registry of sexual offenders, Carter, 36, was convicted of statutory rape in 1997.
