Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of certain Jansal Valley raw macadamia nuts distributed in Georgia because of potential health risk. Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors will check retail stores and warehouses to make sure the recalled products have been removed from sale. Here is the information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:
Sid Wainer and Son of New Bedford is recalling Jansal Valley brand raw macadamia nuts because the product has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more-severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The product comes in a plastic bag labeled as “Jansal Valley Raw Macadamia Nuts” in either 1-pound or 8-ounce packages with a lot code of “469566.” The product was distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders.
Random third-party testing found presence of salmonella in the 1-pound package of Jansal Valley raw macadamia nuts. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to return it to the place of purchase; anyone with questions may contact the company at 1-800-423-8333, extension 168 or 119, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
