A threat against Midway Middle School today was deemed by authorities to be unfounded.

Fort Stewart Director of Public Affairs Ron Elliott said that Fort. Stewart CID, Military Police, Midway police and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office investigated the allegation of a threat communicated over social media and deemed it unfounded.

Over the weekend, authorities learned of an alleged threat made by an MMS student about shooting up the school. Midway police officers and county deputies were dispatched to the school today for extra patrols as a precaution.

“Everything that we do, we take the safety of soldiers and family members extremely seriously. It’s a priority for us. Anything that happens we exercise due diligence and make sure that we investigate it,” Elliott said.

Liberty County School System Chief Information Officer Dr. Patti Crane issued an emailed statement Monday afternoon concerning the situation.

“Normal safety procedures were followed to lessen anxiety and concerns for the students and staff of Midway Middle School allowing school operations to continue as normal,” she wrote. “The investigation into the alleged incident is still ongoing however we have no reason to believe that students or staff were ever in any danger.”
