ATLANTA - Cumberland Island has been chosen to represent Georgia on a new series of quarters to be issued by the U.S. Mint.
The series of quarters featuring national parks and other sites will be issued starting next year. Each U.S. state and territory will be represented in the series.
Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner approved the barrier island as Georgia's featured site, with input from Gov. Sonny Perdue and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.
The island will appear on the reverse side of the quarter, with the portrait of George Washington remaining on the coin's face.
