Suspect caught in investigation of Deputy's death

Jerry Jonathan Englum, 22, of Ridgeland, South Carolina

Ludowici, Ga (January 31, 2020) – On January 30, 2020, Jerry Jonathan Englum, 22, of Ridgeland, South Carolina was arrested for Homicide by Vehicle, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, and Reckless Driving.  On Thursday, January 23, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted the Long County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol in the events surrounding the death of Long County Deputy Sheriff Sheldon Gordon Whiteman.  While assisting in a vehicle pursuit, Deputy Whiteman was involved in a vehicle accident which resulted in his death.  

 

During the investigation, it was determined that Englum was the driver of the vehicle being pursued on the morning of January 23, 2020.  Englum had numerous outstanding Felony Warrants from Liberty County, Georgia. The U. S. Marshal’s located and arrested Englum without incident, in Colleton, Walterboro County, South Carolina
