The USO – the leading non-profit organization supporting U.S. service members and their families – has teamed up with Kroger – America’s largest grocer – to launch a mobile food programming that will serve local military communities.
The initiative arrived in Hinesville May 21 with a “Stuff the Truck” event at Fort Stewart with an afternoon event and meal for family members of forward deployed service members.
Courtney Due, Center Operations and Program Manager for USO Fort Stewart said it was one way of saying thanks to the military personnel and their families.
“It is just meant to be a special event for them now that COVID is over,” she said. “We are able to do these sorts of things and bring some fun and excitement to all our families at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.”
Partnering with Kroger the grocery store had several of their chefs on hand providing meals. Children could get their faces painted or paint on the sidewalks. Folks could also enjoy plenty of cotton-candy and popcorn and several other tasty treats provided by the local grocery store.
“As a military spouse UI can tell you that moving around from installation to installation, with your spouse being gone constantly and just dealing with everything, it is great to have a home away from home, and that is what the USO provides.”
Atlanta Kroger Corporate Affairs Manager Felix Turner said it was important to support the military families, especially in small, rural areas. He said the Partnership with USO said they fed over 1,000 families at the event.
Starting in Georgia, the USO | Kroger mobile units are delivering food to our heroes in uniform, stopping to replenish supplies at Kroger stores along the way. Kroger shoppers have joined the mission donating supplies at ‘Stuff the Truck’ events. The supplies included items such as food, drinks, hygiene products, and toys.
