Williams wins primary challenge; Jones re-elected to school board chair

State Rep. Al Williams cruised to victory in Tuesday’s Democrat primary.

Williams received more than 61.5% of the votes cast against challenger Sabrina Newby. Williams will face Republican challenger Kevin Remillard in the November general election.

School board chair Verdell Jones also won re-election, garnering nearly 52% of the votes in a four-person field.

Terry Cook won the District 4 seat with nearly 64% of the vote. Richard Hayes won the District 6 school board seat, with more than 58.9% of the votes.

Connie Thrift held off a primary challenge from Janelle Johns to win the Democrat primary for the county commission District 3 seat. She will face Greg Lachowsky.

The District 1 Democrat primary will go to a runoff as none of the candidates received more than 41% of the votes. Challenger Larry Baker had the most votes, with 726 votes, and incumbent Marion Stevens Sr. received 682. Stanley Brown got 384 votes. A runoff between Baker and Stevens will be held June 16.
