Letter to the editor: Thanks for spreading sickle cell awareness
letter to editor new

Dear Editor,

Tapestry Connections Inc. would like to express sincere appreciation to the Coastal Courier and to Mrs. Cristy Flenner, school nurse at Liberty Elementary School, for helping raise awareness of sickle cell disease and the challenges many students and families face each day.

We are especially grateful to Mrs. Flenner for sharing valuable information with her colleagues about sickle cell disease and the supportive services offered through Tapestry Connections. Her willingness to educate others reflects compassion, leadership, and a strong commitment to the well-being of students and families in our community.

Mrs. Flenner emphasized an important reality that many people may not fully understand: students living with sickle cell disease often face significant health challenges that can make regular school attendance difficult. Pain crises, fatigue, frequent medical appointments, and hospitalizations can disrupt their educational experience and underscore the need for awareness and support from educators and the broader community.

During her discussion, Mrs. Flenner also highlighted Camp New Light, a special camp experience for children ages 7-17 living with sickle cell disease. The camp provides encouragement, friendship, education, recreation, and support for young people navigating these challenges. Registration for the upcoming camp is now closed. Families are encouraged to stay connected with Tapestry Connections for updates and information about Camp New Light for Summer 2027. Tapestry Connections is honored to assist families by covering the registration fee and providing a stipend for personal items, helping ensure students can fully enjoy the experience.

In addition, she shared information about the Young Adult Retreat for sickle cell warriors ages 18-25, taking place June 5-7. This retreat is designed to encourage young adults through wellness activities, fellowship, education, empowerment, and personal growth while connecting them with others who understand their journey.

Through advocacy, education, and outreach, Tapestry Connections remains committed to supporting individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease. Partnerships with caring professionals like Mrs. Flenner help strengthen understanding, encourage compassion, and ensure that students receive the support they need both academically and emotionally.

We also thank the Coastal Courier for providing a platform to share important community health information. Your support in highlighting educational and community- centered initiatives makes a meaningful difference.

Again, we thank Mrs. Cristy Flenner for her dedication, kindness, and willingness to advocate for others, and we thank the Coastal Courier for recognizing the importance of raising awareness about sickle cell disease.
