Blue Tide loses to Red Raiders 44-26

Riding on the arm of Savannah Christian’s Russell DeMassi, the Red Raiders defeated the Long County Blue Tide football team 44-26 Friday.
With Long County needing a win, and on their homecoming night, DeMassi torched the Blue Tide secondary with five touchdown passes. Three of them were caught by Tyler Sumner.
Long County jumped out to an early lead over the Red Raiders when tailback Prince Moody ran in for a 22-yard touchdown with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.  Eli Guest’s extra point attempt was then blocked by the Raiders, leaving the Tides’ with a 6-0 score.  
It didn’t take the Raiders long to bounce back as they scored before the quarter ended, and converted the point after attempt for a 7-6 lead at the end of one.
The Savannah team also was able to jump out front with 10:07 left in the half after another score, but they missed the PAT so it was 13-6, Red Raiders.
The Blue Tide started their next drive on their own 35-yard line, but after a fumble and a false-start penalty, they were facing a third and 30 situation from their own 15-yard line.
Quarterback Justin Boyd went back for a pass and hit wide out Ricky Rivera, who was racing down the sideline. Rivera caught the ball around the Savannah Christian 45-five yard line, fought the defensive back off and scored a spectacular 85-yard touchdown. But this point after also failed and the Tide still trailed 12-13.
After the kickoff, the Raiders had the ball on their own 27-yard line and drove the ball to the Blue Tide 44-yard line. DeMassi then hit Sumner for a 44-yard strike, and after the extra point, Savannah was up 20-12.
The Blue Tide continued to play with the Savannah team, and on their next drive they moved the ball to their opponent’s 16-yard line. On a first down, Boyd hit Moody for the 16 yard score to narrow the gap to two. The Tide then decide to go for the two points, and after Boyd hit Paul Lewandowski in the end zone, the game was all even at 20 apiece.
After this score, the wheels fell off for the Long County team, and the Red Raiders out scored the home team 23 to 6 making the final score 44-26.
With the loss, the Raiders improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in 2-AA Region play, while the Blue Tide dropped to 3-4, but more importantly 0-4 in the region.  
With the loss, the Tide realistically fell out of the play off run, and will now try to play spoilers for the remainder of the season.
The Blue will travel to Darien this week as they face the McIntosh County Buccaneers.  The Bucs are 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the region. Game time is 7:30.
