The Bradwell Tigers take to their home field tonight as they face the Griffin Bears.
It is the Tigers first home game of the season and as they do every year the Tigers will honor the military. The players will each wear a Third ID sticker on their helmets and Col. Tom James, head of the Fourth brigade, will meet and speak with the tiger players before the game.
The Fourth Brigade is scheduled to deploy in late September or early October. Military personnel will receive $3 off the admission price with proper ID.
The Tigers come home after a disappointing loss to Glynn Academy in the regular season opener last week. According to head coach Jim Walsh it was a loss due to miscues and offensive penalties more so than an inability to move the ball as the Tigers finished the game with over 260 yards.
Overall the defense for the Tigers held their ground and the only points that Glynn was able to make was due to a penalty after a missed coverage on the kicking team. Going into tonight’s game Defensive coordinator Jim Miller looks to maintain his defensive strategy.
“We are sticking to the same game plan,” he said. “Glynn Academy was more of a wide running team. They ran without a tight end, they ran a lot from the Wing T formation where they would take the run wide and not up the middle. “Griffin however has an established full back,” he said.
Miller said that Griffin has a big offensive line and a good set of backs and set his main goal in attacking the Bears running game.
“Our work is going to be cut out for us tonight. Our goal tonight is to stop the fullback. If we can stop the fullback we can slow their offense down, if we don’t we are in for a long night,” Miller said.
Miller said the strength of the defense lies in their ability to play cohesively as a unit. “ I’m not singling out any one player over another,” he said. “I want these guys to play as a group. “I don’t want anybody to say they are more important than anybody else. The defensive are 11 guys that have to play together. That is the only way to accomplish the goals they set for themselves, they have to play together and not as individuals. We had some great individual performances last week but we have to see them as a unit,” he said.
While still young, Miller said a lot of the players have game experience from last year and are veterans on the field. The newer players have a quicker learning process to adjust to, while the veterans now see the play unfold easier.
“The younger guys on the team see the play as a blur right now and the veterans can see the play unfold and make adjustments, it’s all about playing time and experience,” Miller said.
The Griffin Bears opened their season with a shut out (23-0) win against Lithia Springs last week. The Bears crippled the Tigers last season with a stunning 48-0 victory. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Olvey and tickets are $6 at the gate.
