Fourth annual Watkins flag-football tourney set
FOOTBALL 3

The fourth annual Joe Watkins Memorial Scholarship Flag Football Tournament has been set for Dec. 20 on the soccer fields at James Brown Park in Hinesville.
The tournament raises money for scholarships to high-school graduates in Liberty County, who played baseball or softball during their prep careers. This year’s recipients were Jeremy Scott and Meagan Folker, who graduated from LCHS.
The tournament is named for an LCHS graduate who was attending Georgia Southern University on a baseball scholarship in 2011 when he died in a car wreck. His friends, Mystery Ellert and Levi Deese, thought up the tournament as a tribute to Watkins. They, along with friends Brandon Whitmore, Trey Sikes, Cameron Harris, Javaughn Shuman and Austin Schultz, have kept it going. Kathy Sikes heads up adult volunteers and tracks concessions and the money.
Over the years, six $1,000 scholarships have been granted.
The tournament is scheduled for when college students are home of the holidays.
To get a team in the tourney, call Whitmore at 912-480-7528 or find him on Facebook. Adults can volunteer by calling Sikes at 977-2999.
