The First Presbyterian Christian Academy Highlanders set out for a double-header Saturday against Citizens Christian Academy in Columbus. Both teams braved temperatures in the low 40s and winds hitting 40 mph.
Game one
In the first game Highlander Matthew Brown had the mound for all seven innings.
FPCA tied the game with a bases clearing triple by Griffin Larkin. It was Larkin's second triple of the game. Brown, Carson Smith and Kyle Hagler all had one hit apiece for the Highlanders. But the CC Patriots had a seventh inning rally to win by 1 (8-9).
But the Highlander had another game to go and were determined to turn the tables on the Patriots.
Game two
This time it was the Highlanders batting away for a last inning rally to bring down the Patriots 4-3. Hagler was 3 for 3 at the plate and drove in the winning run. Ricky Gilliard went the distance for the Highlanders with 4 stolen bases, and scored the winning run in the last inning.
"I can see improvement in every game that we play," Highlander coach Joey Brown said. "The players are getting used to their respective positions. We've got a couple of tough games this week against some very established programs but we'll continue to work hard to get ready. One things for sure, these guys don't quit."
The Highlanders are home today to challenge David Emanuel at 4 p.m., and have another double-header at home on Friday against Pinewood Christian at 3:30.
The Highlanders play home games at Liberty Field.
