Registration for the third Annual Healthy Hinesville 5K Run/Walk on Oct. 10 is open.

A $20 early bird rate is available until Thursday at www.cityofhinesville.org/healthyhinesville5K or in person at Hinesville City Hall.

Students and groups of five or more may also register for $15 per person.

The 5K is part of the city’s Healthy Hinesville initiative to encourage healthy lifestyles for employees and residents. This event will highlight mental illness and promote total wellness.

“Last year, our sponsors, race participants, volunteers and community supporters raised $3,450,” said Krystal Hart, the city’s public-relations manager. “This year, our goal is $5,000 with 100 registered participants.”

Proceeds will be used to purchase items for patients at the Georgia Regional Hospital at Savannah. The hospital is responsible for the care of patients from southeast Georgia with mental, emotional and developmental disabilities.

It is part of a statewide initiative led by the Georgia Municipal Association to recognize and visit mental-health patients during the holiday season.

“Highlighting physical health and mental health in this one event is important,” Mayor Jim Thomas said. “We are grateful for employees, businesses and residents coming together to show that we care.”

The race will take place in downtown Hinesville, and the price will be $25 on race day. For more information on Healthy Hinesville, call 912- 876-3564.
