LCHS Lady Panther Jana Jones placed first in the discus throw at the 2010 Georgia High School Association state track with a toss of 123 feet, 8 inches earlier this year. Last weekend, Jones hit another milestone when she placed first in shot put at the Junior Olympics Georgia Association Championships meet in Atlanta.

Jones, representing her AAU summer track team, We Run It, cleared a distance of 33 feet, 3 inches in the young women’s division.

The team, coached by Nathan Mims, also had a first-place finish in the intermediate girls category when Briannae Gadson cleared 33 feet, 6.5 inches in shot put.

We Run It teammates Courtney Bennett won second place in shot put, hitting 32 feet, 9 inches, and JaVoni Canty won fifth place with a toss of 26 feet, 7 inches.

"All of them qualify for the regional in North Carolina coming up July 8-11," Mims said. "And that is the qualifying meet for the Junior Olympics."

This year’s Junior Olympics are the last weekend in July in Sacramento, Calif.

Mims said he think Jones has a chance at the Junior Olympics.
