EVANS – The Lakeside-Evans Panthers’ scoring output on offense – and defense – gave them plenty of cushion Friday night against Bradwell Institute.
The Panthers blew open the Region 1-AAAAA football game with three defensive scores in a span of just under two minutes, and Lakeside-Evans coasted to a 59-20 win over the Tigers.
With the loss, the Tigers fell to 2-6 on the year and 1-5 in the region. Lakeside improved its record to 8-1 on the season and 6-1 in the region.
The Panthers led 17-0, scoring on their first three possessions, when the defense got into the act.
A 25-yard interception return with 1:24 left in the first quarter put the Panthers ahead 24-0. Three plays later, Solomon Humphreys picked off Carlito Savea’s heave at midfield and ran it back for a score.
On the Tigers’ next play from scrimmage, Corbin Velez scooped up a fumble at the Tigers 19-yard line and rambled in to extend Lakeside’s lead to 38-0.
Jack Thexton’s 8-yard touchdown run out of the wildcat formation pushed the advantage to 45-0.
Bradwell finally displayed its big play ability on the ensuing kickoff, Jacoby Pasley’s 95-yard return for a touchdown.
Tyon Jones, normally on the receiving end of long TD passes, connected for a pair of 72-yard scoring strikes in the second half for the Tigers, one to Pasley in the third quarter and another on the final play from scrimmage in the game.
Lakeside quarterback Ty Jones was 8 of 10 for 171 yards and two touchdowns, and Brandon Grissom ran for 107 yards and a score in the first half. Jones connected with Mikeal Grissom on both TD passes, one for 21 yards and another for 72 yards to open the second half.
The Panthers’ final TD came on defense, as Josh Young took a fumble back 98 yards in the third quarter.
The Tigers go back on the road to Columbia County this Friday to meet the Evans Knights. The Knights are 4-4 overall and 2-4 on the season after beating Greenbrier 28-17.
