The Liberty County Recreation Department’s newest star athletes, the wrestling team, just finished a meet in Jacksonville with several of their wrestlers placing in the top four in different categories.
The Mat Rats traveled to Jacksonville to participate in their first open meet. This was the first time since the group formed in March they went for competition and head coach Philip Howe said his team had an outstanding showing.
“There were 120 wrestlers from different areas of Florida and Georgia, so to have some of our wrestlers place in first, third and fourth was great,” he said. “We couldn’t ask for a better outing.”
The team took first place overall in the middle school division. They also took first place in the 70 pound weight class, first place in the light weight class, third and fourth place in the 120 pound weight class, fourth place in the 140 pound weight class and fourth place in the 180 pound weight class.
The meet in Jacksonville was the precursor to beginning of the regular wrestling season. The Mat Rats return to Jacksonville Saturday for a meet in Orange Park.
