The midget girls took the field at Bradwell Institute for a showdown between the Cosmopolitan Club girls and the Ratcliffe and Smith team on Thursday afternoon in what turned out to be a high-scoring, 4-inning game.
The Cosmo girls took a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning making it 4-0. Ratcliffe and Smith pitcher Morgan Mullis was quickly taken off the mound, but it was not because of her pitching. Mullis took a hard hit to the head from a throw. Although a little shaken she was not injured and moved to third base. Victoria Anthony took the mound for team Ratcliffe for the rest of the game.
Unfortunately Mullis took another hit, this time by a wild pitch that walked her to first. Ratcliffe and Smith rallied around their player by scoring 14 runs, taking a 14-4 lead.
The Cosmos girls were not going to let Ratcliffe stay with such an extended lead and closed the gap by scoring 7 runs in the second, making it 14-11.
Cosmo scored 4 more and Ratcliffe scored 1 to tie the game 15-15 in the third. But after their 1 run Ratcliffe and Smith were done when the Cosmo pitcher struck out the next 3 batters.
In the fourth the Cosmo girls took the lead scoring 2 runs. Trying to regain the edge the Ratcliffe girls scored another run but where then struck out.
Team Cosmopolitan took the victory in a game that took a little over 2 hours.
Terri Mullis, Ratcliffe and Smith head coach said she was still pleased with the girls despite the loss.
"At this age it's about the fundamentals," she said. "Learning the game, the enjoyment and good sportsmanship. I feel good. They are coming around. We have some players that never played the game before so they are coming around and doing well for the season. I'm proud of them. Right now we are 2-2 in the season."
Cosmopolitan coach Jennifer Conrood agrees that at this stage it's about the fundamentals.
"This is a learning league and the fundamentals will take you everywhere in life not just on the softball field," she said. "I'm really proud of them because we had a bad game the other night and they seemed extremely down. We gave them a positive and motivational talk and they came back today and played. You know you learn more in defeat than in winning and you can't win all the time. Sometimes the more you lose the better you will be in the future."
