Several Tigers qualified for the state track meet during the Region 3-AAAAA finals April 26 at Bradwell Institute.
The boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Marsalis Jackson, Anthony Holsendolph, Markell McKee and Jahlil Witt made the cut for the state meet. The girls’ 4x400-relay team of Quintunya Chapamn, KeAndrea Ladson, Quianika Hatchell and Shonteria Williams also qualified for the state meet.
Chapman and Holsendolph qualified in the long jump. Chapman’s jump of 19 feet, 1 1⁄4  inches earned her a first-place ranking among seniors in Georgia, according to ga.milesplit.com. She also earned two national silver-standard rankings after finishing in first place in the 400-meter dash (56.28) and first in the 200-meter dash (24.95).
Chapman is expected to sign a letter of intent at 4 p.m. today to run track for the University of Georgia Bulldogs.
Witt qualified in the triple jump, McKee qualified in the 800-meter run and Jamael Smith qualified in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Ladson will compete in the high jump at the state meet, and Sherina Hornsby qualified in the 800 and 1,600.
Coach DeAndre Davis said the region finals came down to the wire for the girls.
“The girls’ meet was very close, but Camden edged the girls out for the final meet,” he said. Camden took first place with 164 points. The Lady Tigers scored 149.5 and Groves scored 87 for third.
The boys were tied with Camden at 123. After a pep talk before the final event, Davis said his boys decided to go for the win.
“Holsendolph and McKee expressed the importance to the guys to win the fifth consecutive championship,” Davis said. The boys beat Camden, 144-142. Groves came in third with 100.
