The Long County High School baseball team on Tuesday took on a strong Jeff Davis squad in Ludowici, and though the Blue Tide kept the game close, the Yellow Jackets won, 6-4.
Jeff Davis entered the game ranked No. 8 in Class AA, according to MaxPreps.com.
Zach Duncan got the loss on the hill for the Blue Tide, going 4 innings and allowing four hits and six runs, two of which were earned.  He also walked and struck out two batters. Cody Fleck finished the game for Long County, walking one batter, striking out two and giving up two hits in 2 innings of action.
Phillip Swindle, Clay Strickland, Duncan and Fleck each batted 1 for 3, while Austin Mills and Tristan Goodloe each batted 1 for 4.
After the game, head coach Tyler Rogers talked about what he told his team and their upcoming game against Benedictine Military School, who is No. 13 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.
“I told them it was a tough one to swallow, but it makes Friday’s game against Benedictine even bigger,” he said. “We really need to put everything together for these last couple of weeks.”
With the loss, Long County fell to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in Region 2-AA.  The Tide were scheduled to host Claxton on Thursday in a non-region game also at home. Results were not available in time for this story.
Today’s home game against Benedictine is huge for the Blue Tide, but it won’t be easy as the Cadets come into the contest undefeated in region action (6-0) and are 8-4 overall. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.  Tonight also is Military Appreciation Night, with the pre-game ceremony starting at 7:15.
