First Presbyterian Christian Academy and Liberty County High School had rough starts on the diamond this week, while Bradwell Institute got a much-needed win.
FPCA fell to third-ranked Edmund Burke, 13-7, on Tuesday in a heated battle in Hinesville. Dalton Smiley was 3 for 4 with three triples and three RBIs for the Highlanders. DeShaun Collins was 2 of 3 with a double and triple and a RBI. James Phillips scored two runs on two bases on balls and a hit-by-pitch.
FPCA pitcher Phillip Swindell went four innings, earning six strikeouts while giving up four walks and five runs on four errors, according to coach Andy Yanzetich.
FPCA is 4-3 overall and 0-3 in Region 2-AA of the Georgia Independent School Association classifications. The Highlanders were scheduled to play at Memorial Day on Thursday and will host Memorial Day at 4 p.m. today.
Liberty County High School fell at Glynn Academy, 13-3, in five innings on Wednesday. Liberty is 2-8 overall and 0-4 in Region 3A-AAAA. The Panthers play at 6 p.m. today at South Effingham.
Also on Wednesday, the Bradwell Tigers hit their way to a 14-3 win in Darien.
According to Tiger baseball coach Rhett Hellgren, pitcher Chris Nunn earned his first varsity win. Chris Gilmore came in as a relief pitcher in the effort. The Tigers had 10 hits in an offensive
 effort they’ve struggled to do this season.
In the first inning, the Tigers drew three walks from their first four batters. Stephen Felton and Nunn each had two-run singles to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. The Tigers took a 10-1 lead in the second inning off a few scattered hits and walks.
MCA threatened in the fifth inning when it loaded the bases off walks and a Buccaneer punched a soft line drive toward second. Nunn fielded it and threw home for the force-out. The Buccaneers failed to advance, which gave Tiger catcher Sage Sammons an opportunity to throw to third for another force out, and Chris Bell threw to Ryan Desbiens at second to tag out that runner.
The Tigers then added four more runs off four hits, a walk and a few passed balls. Felton led the Tigers at the plate going 3 for 4.  Darrius Tilghman went 2 for 3.
The Tigers are 4-10 overall and 1-5 in Region 3-AAAAA. They play today at Windsor Forest at 6 p.m.
