The Mabel Creel Memorial Golf Tournament was June 21 at Cherokee Rose Country Club in Hinesville.
Proceeds from the tournament awarded two $500 scholarships to Taylor “TJ” Standard and Phillip Swindell. Standard, who attended the tournament, is a graduate of Liberty County High School and will attend Georgia Southern University in the fall. Swindell, who was playing in a baseball tournament, is a graduate of Long County High School and will attend Piedmont College this fall.
This year, the team of Angie Dixon, Tracey Howard, Darrell Ballance and Tammy Ballance took home the top spot, winning $400. Second place and $300 went to Chuck Smith, John Floyd, Ricky Floyd and former scholarship winner Ben Floyd. Third place and $200 went to Bucky Keel, Jeff Stewart, Steve Wiggens and James Jones, who donated their winnings back to the HAPfan Golf Foundation which oversees the tourney.
HAPfan board member Elise Stafford said $500 sponsors this year were CenturyLink, Liberty Chrysler, Liberty Regional Medical Center and Rehab, Hertz Rental, Hinesville Ford, Verdell Jones State Farm Insurance, George and Lynn Stafford and Mike Reed Chevrolet.
Stafford said, “Thanks to all of these sponsors and all of the other ones who wished to remain anonymous. I also want to thank all of the volunteers, the players and the Coastal Courier for always covering our event. To date we have awarded twelve $500 scholarships to graduating seniors of Liberty and Long Counties.”
