Youth from all over the state came out Sept. 29 for the seventh annual Shawnee McGowan Junior Rodeo at the NC Ranch in Long County.
The rodeo is in memory of McGowan, who died in 2006 from injuries sustained in vehicle accident. Proceeds from the rodeo go to scholarships for local teens and area nonprofit organizations.
According to Shawnee McGowan’s mother, Alice McGowan, this year’s rodeo raised approximately $6,000. She said $1,800 was taken in from the 68 youth participants and divided among the competitors who placed. Also, part of the proceeds will go to the Walker Middle School athletic department.
