Sikes earns league honor

Liberty County High School alum and Savannah State baseball player Charles Trey Sikes.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Former Liberty County High School and current Savannah State University baseball player Charles Trey Sikes was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) player of the week by the league for the week ending June 15, according to a NECBL news release.
Sikes plays for the Valley Blue Sox, which are in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In five games, the rising junior at Savannah State was 7 for 19 at the plate, batting .368 on the week. He scored five runs and boasted two doubles and two home runs as well, while driving in four runs. Sikes reached safely in all five games.
On the season, Sikes ranks fifth in the league with a .400 batting average (12-for-30), tied for second in home runs (two), tied for first in games played (eight), second in hits (12), first in total bases (21), third in doubles (two), tied-for-first in extra-base hits (five) and second in slugging percentage (.700).
“His mother and I are very proud of his accomplishments,” Sikes’ dad, Charles E. Sikes, said. “He is holding his own against players from major college programs across the U.S.”
As of Thursday afternoon, according to necbleague.com, the Blue Sox are tied with the Vermont Mountaineers for the lead in the Northern Division with 5-4 records.
