The Long County High School boys’ basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday night by easily defeating Jeff Davis High School, 72-45, in Ludowici.
It was a solid effort, Tide coach Deshon Brock said.
“Tonight we played hard for four quarters,” he said. “It’s the first time this year where we have done that. We also shared the ball. We just played really well tonight.” In the first half, Jamal Anderson put up 15 points, and Henry Peoples added 11 more to help give the Blue Tide a 40-19 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Long County continued to dominate the visiting team, outscoring Jeff Davis, 24-10, to go into the final period leading 64-29.
With the game well in hand, Brock made several substitutions to give his back-up players some minutes on the floor.
Peoples finished with 19 to lead Long County, while Anderson had 15. Jarquez Payne, Josh Berry and Chris LaRochester each scored 10 points for the Tide.
Joe McNeely led Jeff Davis with 13 points, and Al Hall added 12.
The win improved Long County to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in Region 2-AA. Jeff Davis fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the region.
The Blue Tide will play two region games this weekend, starting with Toombs County (4-3) tonight in Lyons. Long County will take on McIntosh County Academy (1-6) on Saturday in Ludowici. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ Region 2-AA matchup, winless Long County High School fell to Jeff Davis, 54-18, on Tuesday in Ludowici.
The Lady Tide (0-7) played hard and kept the game relatively close in the first half to trail, 28-12. But the Lady Yellow Jackets came out on fire in the second half, outscoring the Lady Tide, 26-6.
“We’re getting better,” Long County assistant coach Kala Hires said. “We’re working hard and hoping to be ready for the region tournament, but we still have a lot of work to do offensively and defensively.”
Vonta Turner led the Lady Tide with 10 points, while Amandah Garvin added four. Troianna Murray and Raven Rose chipped in a basket each for Long County, which plays Toombs County (0-4) tonight in Lyons.
On Saturday, the Lady Tide will play host to McIntosh County Academy (2-6).
Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
