The Long County boys basketball team lost their first game Tuesday to the Savannah Christian Red Raiders.
With the Blue Tide having to travel to Savannah, they were unable to come up with the shots needed to compensate for the Raiders’ big plays in overtime, and they lost their first game of the season, 55-62.
“Savannah hit a couple of threes from the corner, and went up by six. We were able to get a couple of steals and were able to get a lay-up or two, but the two big threes killed us”, said head coach Deshon Brock.
Despite getting their first loss of the year, Brock said he thought the team would learn from the outcome.
“I thought we played hard as a team and just came a little bit short. But I believe the loss can help us in that it made us realize on any given night we can be beat,’ he said.
The coach noted, “This loss humbled us a little bit, but we took a lot of positive things away from the game.”
In the game, the Tide was led in scoring by Robert Gamble who had 14 points, while Eli Guests had 10 points and Jimmy Bacon put up 9.
The Blue Tide Boys will try to regroup as they prepare for the Glynn Academy Christmas Tournament beginning Dec. 21 in Brunswick.
“We want to play quality basketball against quality teams. Hopefully, we can get a couple of wins in the tournament and build our momentum back up as we get into the thick of the region play” Brock said.
The Long County team currently has a 7-1 overall mark and a 2-1 mark in the 2-AA Region standings behind the Red Raiders who are 3-0 and Appling County who sits at 2-0.
GaSports also ranked the Blue Tide as the AA-number-four team in the state in a coaches’ poll.
The boys will play their first game in the Christmas Tournament on Dec. 20 against the 4A-AAAA Riverdale Raiders.
