Early in the season, Toronto Blue Jays pitchers had every reason to be frustrated with their team’s offensive efforts. However, each time a member of the pitching rotation was asked about the issue, they seemed certain the bats would eventually come around.
Finally, it appears their predictions have come true as the Blue Jays recently nabbed a 10-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels, and scored seven runs or more in five of their last eight games, winning seven of those eight.
During May, the club had the best record in baseball, going 20-9 and putting them one win away from tying their 2003 team record for wins in one month. The Blue Jays also climbed into third place in the American League Eastern Division.
In Friday’s game against the Angels, McGowan pitched a consistent six innings. Despite giving up 4 runs and 7 hits in the game, the 26-year-old hurler struck out 6 and walked 1 for the night.
After the game, McGowan was all smiles as he told reporters the team was playing good baseball and described recent performances as “fun to watch.”
Friday’ night’s star was none other than first baseman Lyle Overbay, who belted out two home runs and went 3-5 in the game. Overbay had been in a slump, going 0-11 prior to the Angels contest, but still had been the big bat for the team during the past month.
In his last 23 games, Overbay posted a .321 ERA with 4 home runs, 7 doubles, 13 RBI’s, 15 runs, and 14 walks.
McGowan’s record now sits at 4-4 and he has an ERA of 3.95. The Blue Jays are now in third place in the AL East, with a 31-26 record, two games behind Boston (33-24), and three games behind Tampa Bay, who at 33-22, boast the best record in the American League.
McGowan will be starting again June 5 as he and the Jays travel to New York to take on the 27-27 Yankees, who will be trying to make up some ground in the east.
McGowan is 2-2 against the Yanks, and has posted a 5.21 ERA against the team. Thursday’s game time is 1:05 p.m.
