Members of the Southeast Elite Rockets recently brought home medals after competing at the 2010 Track and Field Junior Olympics at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va.
Quintunya Chapman earned a bronze medal when she placed eighth in the nation in the long jump, clearing 18 feet, 5.75 inches. She also finished 11th in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 55.89 seconds.
Joshua McCullan placed 28th in the nation in the triple jump, clearing 40 feet, 2.25 inches. Keandrea Ladson placed 21st in the high jump, also a season best, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Justin Dixon placed 35th in the decathlon, helping the team earn 2,113 points. Dixon placed 28th in the 2000 meter steeplechase, coming in at 7 minutes, 45.93 seconds, and he finished 32nd in the javelin throw with a toss of 102 feet, 9 inches.
Montre Johnson, the youngest Rocket track member at 8, earned a bronze medal by placing seventh in the nation in the long jump, clearing 13 feet, 4.5 inches. Johnson placed 11th in the 100-meter dash, coming in with his season-best time of 13.9 seconds. He also finished 30th in the 200-meter dash at 29.96 seconds.
Rocket’ coach Raphael August said everyone did their best and gave it their all, leaving everything on the track.
"This is all we can ask of them," he said. "It was a privilege for me to see them compete at this level."
