Sunbury 5K celebrates 6th annual run

Competitors run along the path for the Sunbury 5K on Saturday. The event drew 140 entrants.

The rain held off Saturday, allowing 140 entrants to start the  Sunbury 5K, presented by Merritt & Grinstead attorneys at Law.

“This was our sixth annual event, and the rain held off and the weather ended being great. I don’t think it hurt us at all and possibly helped same-day turnout. It was cool and a little breezy, but overall it was great,” race organizer Patrick Boyle said.

The mere aesthetics of the race course, which went along the old tree-lined Sunbury Road and ended at the Crab Company, were reasons enough for anyone to run the race, but the event also benefited a great cause.

“Now that the race is over, we’ll be doing a final tally, but we should be able to again contribute $2,500 or so to our two charity groups: The American Diabetes Association, and then we’ll be also working with the local Vietnam Veterans of America to identify local veterans in need,” Boyle said.

Justin Dolata was the first male runner to cross the finish line, completing the race in a time of 18 minutes, 31 seconds. Dawn Berrios finished first overall for the female division in 23:35.

“Our event normally has just as many walkers as we do racers and runners,” Boyle said. “In fact, many of our racers this year started out as walkers in previous years.

But if there are people who are not sure how to get going, I’d really encourage them to get in touch with the Liberty Run Group in Hinesville. They host a number of training runs each week for runners of any ability. They can contact Josh Maxwell through their (Facebook) page.”

The Sunbury Crab Company, Adam Herndon State Farm Insurance, Darsey Black and Associates and Atlantic Foot and Ankle were the event's gold sponsors. The race is also sponsored by Fort Morris Historic Park, M&M Motors, Rountree & Brady Insurance, Fleet Feet Savannah, Coastal Courier, Ted Hall Attorney and Coldwell Banker / Jimmy Shanken.
